Byron Hinterland: Foodie picks

Byron Hinterland and food.  The two go together like avocado on toast, carrots and honey, tomato and basil, and banana and tahini (try it).  The question is, where is the best food in Byron?

I had the delight of visiting the Byron Hinterland earlier this month and it is pure delight on so many levels.  Rolling hills, curious cows, breathtaking beaches, unique towns and food, glorious food.

To entice your senses and make your tummy grumble, I’ve selected my top foodie picks.  I’m sharing the love, with each food destination being from a different town located in area.  One of the best parts of visiting somewhere is exploring; taking a different route and if possible, making sure you pass some curious cows in a paddock.  With all your exploring, it’s important to nourish and keep your energy levels up.  Here’s some wonderful places that will do just that and more.

Foodie destination: Harvest

Town: Newrybar (approximately 20 minutes drive south from Byron Bay)

How do you make a cafe even better?  Add a deli, a bakery and a veggie garden.

The cafe itself delights the senses, with a wraparound balcony that looks through the trees, allowing the perfect amount of morning sunshine to radiate through.  Two very different dishes were ordered for breakfast, one bold, the other delicate.  Both delicious.

The bold fried eggs with potatoes, corn beef, savoury jam and chargrilled corn (hopefully I’ve recalled correctly there!).  In beautiful contrast, the delicate longan, dragonfruit, strawberry gum with coconut.

Foodie destination: Woods

Town: Bangalow (approximately 20 minutes drive south from Byron Bay)

Tucked away in the art precinct in gorgeous Bangalow, you can find Woods.  Creativity flows through the menu and is beautifully captured in the presentation.  Absolutely bliss all around.

A beautiful location (there are some table and chairs hidden to the left)

Summer eggs with smashed peas

Orange scented granola with beetroot cashew yoghurt

Coffee and flowers, a perfect way to start the day!

Foodie destination: Bayleaf

Town: Byron Bay

Amongst the vibrancy and bustle of Byron, it’s difficult to choose where to eat.  I’m pleased to say, I chose well in enjoying brunch at Bayleaf.  It was one of those lovely moments where we sat at a shared table and ended up chatting away to a couple from LA who were on their honeymoon.  Hence, only a single (oddly focussed) picture was taken as we were busy chatting away.

The selected dish?  A vegetable loaded brunch with mushrooms, kale, peas and poached eggs

Foodie destination: Table View

Town: Brunswick Heads (approximately 15 minutes drive north from Byron Bay)

It’s hard to call it but I could be saving the best to last.  A simple setting that delivers amazing food with presentation and taste equally delighting the senses.  The pictures speak for themselves.

Have you ever seen a more beautiful open sandwich?  If so, I’d like to know please

Potato waffle, yes, a most tasty potato waffle
